The Department of Public Safety is looking for a Crime Analyst. This position will report to the Assistant Police Chief and support the Universitys mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all other activities.
Under direct supervision of Public Safety management, perform professional level technical and analytical support in the daily operations of the University of Cincinnati Police Division. Assist all Division personnel in a timely manner in the collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of the data collected including, but not limited to, crime, arrests, calls for service, and traffic data.
- Access, download, interpret, and convert computer generated information into a readable and usable format.
- Analyzes data from various sources and makes detailed analyses to determine specific crime patterns.
- Proficient use of computers, using spreadsheets, word processing, business graphics, database management, and mapping for the Police Chief, Command Staff, and other Division personnel
- Assists the Police Divisions staff in selecting and accessing computerized information through the Regional Computer Center that will aid them in their replies to citizens' questions and complaints.
- Designs computerized reports for Division use from data generated by the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system in the Communications Section.
- Provides requested information and assists media personnel through the Public Information Office (PIO) with the requested information.
- Confers with Division and surrounding law enforcement personnel to gather and exchange information for analysis and presentation.
- Assists Division members in problem solving using available data.
- Provides analysis of crime, arrests, and calls for service in support of Police Division mission and goals.
- Provides technical level administrative crime analysis assistance to Command Staff.
- Collects, compiles, and analyzes information from various sources on a variety of special topics; compiles reports and generate maps; undertakes a variety of special projects as needed.
- Prepares written materials to communicate Division activities and programs for internal and external distribution; acts as a resource to persons with inquiries about Division statistics, activities, and services.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and service requests.
- Compiles, calculates, maintains, and reviews Division monthly executive information summary.
- Performs other tasks and duties related to the analysis of crime management for the UC Police Division at the direction of the Assistant Police Chief.
Working and Physical Conditions
- Environmental Conditions: Mostly indoor; exposure to office computer screens; automobile travel may be required.
- Physical Conditions: Duties require maintaining physical conditioning necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged time periods; light lifting and carrying; general manual dexterity required; must be able to operate assigned vehicle if required.
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Science, Public Administration, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Statistical Analysis, Information Management, or a related field with a minimum of four (4) years of related experience in law enforcement OR Associates degree and at least six (6) years of related experience OR- at least eight (8) years of related experience in law enforcement. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.Must have a valid Operator's License.
- One (1) year of prior work experience in crime analysis/research and/or intelligence analysis/research
- Experience may include teaching and/or research as a paid/unpaid graduate assistant
- Proficient with computer usage and have proven ability to identify crime patterns and statistical trends to anticipate and prevent future crimes
- Willing to submit to a police background investigation due to the sensitive nature of the work.
- Ability to obtain certification to gain access to NCIC, LEADS, and RCIC (nation, state, and regional crime systems).
- Business English; e.g. grammar, standard correspondence format, etc.
- English usage; e.g. spelling, grammar, and punctuation proficiency.
- Elements of report preparation and presentation.
- Use of computers and related software in the performance of duties; e.g., word processing and spreadsheets including, but not limited to, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, CAD, Mapinfo, ArcView, and GIS.
- Basic principles and practices of mathematics and statistics.
- Basic principles of quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Pertinent city, state, and federal laws, regulation, and practices.
- Operate a computer in performance of assigned duties.
- Use computer software such as spreadsheets, word processing, graphical presentation, and statistical analysis.
- Operate assigned motor vehicle as required.
