To meet the Ohio financial responsibility law for auto insurance coverage you must buy at least the minimum amount. The current minimum liability limits are $25,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. This basic coverage is referred to as 25/50/25.
Insurance providers utilize information such as where you live, the brand/model of vehicle you drive, how you use your vehicle and the policy limits you select to determine the rates they will charge you. Depending on what coverage you purchase, auto insurance pays for towing, vehicle replacement or repair, court costs, rental cars, medical expenses, and other expenses. OH insurance companies recommend that drivers in your state carry more than the state-required minimum liability coverage. Choosing a policy that only includes state minimum requirements may help drivers get the best premiums. However Ohio uses the tort system to determine who will pay for expenses that result because of an automobile accident. The driver found to be at fault for the accident is responsible for paying ALL costs incurred. The Ohio state minimum required liability auto insurance coverage does provide some protection, but those drivers who cause an car accident will have to pay out of pocket for damage that goes over their policy's coverage amounts and this coverage does not cover repair to their vehicle or medical expenses for them or their passenger(s). Collision coverage covers those expenses and Comprehensive coverage covers things like fire, theft, vandalism, etc. If you have financed your vehicle you will probably be required to carry both comprehensive and collision coverage. Should you include comprehensive and collision coverage? One of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to add collision and comprehensive coverage. Both are optional, and many choose to buy them because they cover repairing or replacing your own car. Over 70% of drivers include these coverage in their policy. Collision and comprehensive are valuable but together they add up to a large part of your premium. First you should determine if this coverage is really needed. If you drive an older car that's not worth much, it might not be a good idea to insure it for repair and replacement. Finally, you'll need to decide if having your repairs covered is worth paying the premium. This rule of thumb is helpful: “If your car is worth less than 10 times the premium, buying the coverage may not be cost-effective.” Younger drivers are forced to also comply with OH financial responsibility laws. In most cases parents can add their minor children to their automobile coverage to satisfy the Ohio financial responsibility requirements. Although adding a young driver to an adult's policy will probably be expensive, it's almost certainly cheaper than buying a separate automobile policy for the child. Some insurance companies offer a lower rate for teenagers who have completed an Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS)-approved driver education course.
